My cousin almost wired $18k to a scammer using a deepfake of her boss 😳
Last week, my cousin’s company got hit with a scam where the attackers used a real-time AI deepfake voice and video of her boss on Zoom to request an urgent fund transfer. It looked and sounded exactly like him. Luckily, she double-checked before sending $18k to the “new vendor.”
This scared the hell out of me. If they can fake video calls this well, how are small businesses or even individuals supposed to defend themselves? Is there any real way to verify beyond “trust your gut”?
